Deposits formed by explosive eruptions from Inyo vents
Photograph by C.D. Miller in 1983

These layers of explosive volcanic deposits were exposed in a pit dug by a backhoe so that geologists could determine the type, extent, and frequency of explosive eruptions that occurred from the Inyo chain about 600 years ago. This is one of several holes about 4.5 m deep that geologists excavated in Crater Flat, southwest of Deer Mountain. At this site, the layers erupted from the South Deadman vent are about 4 m thick (the entire section is not shown).
