Photo Information

Mammoth Lakes town, Long Valley caldera, California
Photograph by S.R. Brantley on July 27, 1998

This view of the Town of Mammoth Lakes town is toward the east. The prominent knob in the center of photo is the southern edge of the resurgent dome; the low area to the right is the south moat of Long Valley caldera. The sliver of blue in the middle right of photo is Lake Crowley. In the large version of the photo (click on the photo), a thick rhyolite lava flow can be seen immediately to the left of Lake Crowley. This flow was erupted onto the caldera floor about 290,000 years ago; Hot Creek Gorge cuts into this flow.
