Photo Information

Red Cones, Long Valley area, California
Photograph by S.R. Brantley on August 2, 1998

View from atop Mammoth Mountain is toward the southwest. The Red Cones are in lower left, and the valley in lower right is the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River. Eruptions about 5,000 years ago built the two cinder cones and generated a small lava flow that spilled about 1.5 km down the valley wall.
