Town of Mammoth Lakes and Lake Crowley from atop Mammoth Mountain, California
Photograph by S.R. Brantley on August 2, 1998

View from the summit of Mammoth Mountain is looking towards the east. Town of Mammoth Lakes is along the bottom of photo, and the White Mountains form the skyline. View looks along the axis of the south moat of the caldera between the resurgent dome and the south caldera rim (steep slope in right center of photo). Much of the earthquake activity between 1980 and 1997 occurred beneath the south moat, also known as south-moat seismic zone.
