View toward the northeast from atop Mammoth Mountain, Long Valley Caldera, California
Photograph by S.R. Brantley on August 2, 1998

View from atop Mammoth Mountain is looking towards the northeast. The lava flows that built Earthquake Dome and Southwest Dome are similar in composition to the flows that built Mammoth Mountain. Earthquake Dome is about 148,000 years old and Southwest Dome is about 142,000 years old. The low volcanic cone of Lookout Mountain is visible between Earthquake Dome and treeless Bald Mountain on the north caldera rim.
