RDO-8 is a monitoring site where ground-water levels are monitored in a thermal aquifer near the southwest part of the resurgent dome in Long Valley Caldera. The water levels are measured using a pressure transducer and recorded every 30 minutes on an electronic datalogger, and water quality data also has been collected. The maximum temperature in the well is about 201 °C between 1,100 and 1,304 ft below land surface. This well was drilled to test concepts of the hydrothermal circulation system. It is in an area in the west moat where hot water from depth may flow upward, then southeasterly around the resurgent dome.
Well RDO-8 is housed in a steel shelter in the southwest part of the caldera, about 1 mile north of Mammoth Lakes. Photo taken by C. Farrar, January, 1988.
